U2 sounded soconfident and assured on their debut that perhaps it was inevitable theywould stumble slightly on its follow-up, October. The record isntweaker than its predecessor because it repeats the formula of Boy. Itsbecause the band tries too hard to move forward. Bono, in particular, tries too hard to make big political, emotional, and religiousstatements, but the remainder of the band isnt innocent. In general, the music is too pompous, with the sound overwhelming the actual songs. But when U2 do marry the message, melody, and sound together, as onGloria, I Threw a Brick Through a Window, and I Fall Down, theresults are thoroughly impressive.

One Among theLiving is the successor of the excellent album Beneath the Veil ofWinters Face. An album full of quality Symphonic Rock with AOR-likevocals with catchy refrains. One Among the Living sounds mature andthe band is developing more into a symphonic rock band. The overallsound of this album is a little bit mellower than the previous album. You decide which one you will prefer. But if you like the previous albumBeneath the Veil of Winters Face you wont be disappointed by OneAmong the Living.

AMG review by Hal Horowitz:
On a creativeroll after 2000s acoustic Crossing Muddy Waters, John Hiatt returnedrejuvenated as well as electric. Old backing band the Goners returnedfor his 17th -- and best -- album in the 13 years that have passed sincethe same outfit accompanied him on 1988s classic Slow Turning. Unlikeits intentionally cheesy tongue-in-cheek title, Tiki Bar is a keenlyconstructed collection of heartfelt, bluesy tunes that rock -- and oftenrock hard -- with tremendous soul. Subtle use of drum loops and theoccasional overdub enhances, but doesnt update, Hiatts roots approach.Like the Band, whose The Weight he evokes on Hangin Round Here, these songs seemingly spring from a bottomless well of melodies andhooks, all energized by his raw, throaty vocals. The famed Gonersguitarist, Louisianas Sonny Landreth, positively burns throughout, especially on slide, and the group consistently coalesces like CrazyHorse on a hot night. They follow their eclectic leader through waltzyballads, folksy love songs, mid-tempo burners, and even an unusualalbum-closing ten-minute psychedelic romp, Farther Stars, that takesthe Beatles Tomorrow Never Knows to the Middle Eastern swamps. Farfrom winding down in his fifties, John Hiatt released the most inspiredwork of his life. Not quite as magical as his high-water mark, Bring theFamily, this is still a superbly crafted disc whose songs quickly sinkin and stay lodged in your brain. (3.5/5)

This self-titled release is one of -- if not arguably the -- mostimpressive side project to arise from CSN. Taken beyond face value,Graham Nash/David Crosby is a direct reflection, if not an extension, ofthe musical and personal relationship between its co-creators.Likewise, the results remain true, enhancing rather than detracting fromthe very individualistic styles of Crosby and Nash. The best elementsof each are readily available here, punctuated at every turn by theircomplicated vocal arrangements and air-lock harmonies. In the wake ofthe enormous successes garnered by the albums Crosby Stills & Nash,DA©ja Vu, and Four Way Street, the principal members were essentiallygiven carte blanche studio access to pursue solo projects as well. Thisrelease is the first in what would turn out to be a series ofcollaborative efforts between Crosby and Nash. Musically it continues inmuch the same vein as their respective debut solo releases, If I CouldOnly Remember My Name and Songs for Beginners. Nashs contributionsinclude Girl to Be on My Mind, Strangers Room, and SouthboundTrain -- a twangy piece of Americana featuring a high and lonesomesteel guitar solo from Jerry Garcia that likewise hearkens to theGrateful Deads American Beauty, Elton Johns Tumbleweed Connection, orthe Bands Music From Big Pink. These tracks co-exist in stark contrastto Crosbys more cerebral and incisive contributions, such as WholeCloth, Games, and The Wall Song. The latter features someoutstanding instrumental support from the Grateful Deads Jerry Garcia(guitar), Phil Lesh (bass), and Billy Kreutzman (drums). The core bandrevolves around another set of all-stars: Russell Kunkel (drums), LelandSkylar (bass), Craig Doerge (keyboards), and Danny Kootch Kortchmar(guitar). This same band would more or less continue to back up Crosbyand Nashs duo efforts throughout the remainder of the 70s. GrahamNash/David Crosby offers much of the same unique songwriting andpersonal style which informed their better contributions not only to theCSN-related efforts, but as far back as their offerings with theHollies and the Byrds. Interested enthusiasts are also urged to locateAnother Stoney Evening -- a live acoustic release from October 10, 1971-- which includes seminal live versions of Southbound Train, WhereWill I Be, Immigration Man, and Strangers Room.

With thesuccess of the band Incantation and ethnic South American music in1982-1983, Chris Rea introduced his sixth album, Wired to the Moon, withthe track Bombollini, which was over six minutes of jungle-soundingdrums and the haunting sound of pan pipes. The ethnic flavor continuedon the second track, TouchA© dAmour, which was reggae in the unashamedstyle of lovers rock. However, Rea wasnt going to disappoint his fansaltogether, small in number though they were in the U.K., having built acareer over several albums of soft rock tracks and midtempo balladswith Dire Straits-style guitar breaks, and the rest of the tracks onWired to the Moon fell easily into this category, especially Shine,Shine, Shine and Holding Out, which were lovely emotive ballads.Meanwhile, Ace of Hearts, the title track, and the final song,Winning, were soft rock numbers -- almost MOR -- crying out fordaytime radio play or a top-selling commercial artist to cover them (butneither of these came about). Yet again, the record company releasedjust one single from a Rea album. The one they chose from Wired to theMoon was the uptempo Elton John-style track I Dont Know What It Is ButI Love It. You cant argue with their tenacity, as the song yet againflopped badly, only just scraping into the Top 75 for two weeks, as thealbum floundered at a high of just number 35. Even this, however, was aconsiderable improvement for a Chris Rea album, and one had to applaudMagnet Records for having faith in an artist who obviously pleased somepeople with his music, even if a lot of people didnt buy it.
